Why, exactly? What's our real mission?
Let’s start here, shall we? Obama and his infamous “victory” quote regarding Afghanistan. Spoken like a true liberal. See, America? See what happens when our CiC is not a veteran? See what happens when our CiC is a man who thinks like a liberal woman? God forbid we hurt anyone’s feelings during our hunt for those who detest and hate America.
I’m not the first person to say this, and I won’t be the last, but has it occurred to anyone else that our “mission” in Afghanistan is nothing short of becoming a modern-day Viet Nam? This is what happens when DC decides to politicize any actions of our awesome military. This is what happens when politicians seize upon the Patriotic heartfelt pride that America has for its fighting men and turn it into something awful, horrid, and unrecognizable. This is, indeed, “business as usual”.
I am reminded of these lyrics from Black Sabbath’s song, “War Pigs”:
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait ’til their judgement day comes
Yeah!
Now this isn’t simply a jab at Obama. We went to The Sandbox under Bush, and rightly so. 911 had just happened. America had been assaulted on American soil. Our enemies would answer for this. Absolutely. But where are we now?
We went to Iraq to find Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 911 attacks. Somewhere along the lines we decided to also go after Saddam Hussein, the then-dictator of Iraq, and we caught him. He was eventually punished and hung to death. Then we started trying to establish democracy in Iraq, a Muslim nation, and succeeded. But no Osama bin Laden. From what we know, he remains free and still spouting his pagan-god nonsense about jihad and blah blah blah. He reminds me of a leaky faucet.
Why are we in Afghanistan? Can anyone really answer this? It seems like we have our guys there, fighting for their lives, and no one can tell me why exactly. This is becoming a modern-day Viet Nam, and God help us.
Now before you go labeling me as some anti-war liberal wussy, please understand and know that I am a Veteran and one who knows a little about The Sandbox, so don’t be so quick to judge. Even as a Veteran I look at our mission in Afghanistan and wonder what the hell we are doing.
I thought we were there to hunt and kill terrorists who belong to al Quaida and the Taliban, before they can harm us again. Did I miss something? Is that no longer our mission? My mind is on the soldiers and Marines who are there, not on some policy that will miraculously come out of Congress and the White House. The White House has proven that they don’t know what the hell to do, and I am so tired and sick of them about this.
Reading the news reports it seems to me like we are there to establish democracy in a Muslim nation, like we did in Iraq. When did that happen? When did we become the Democracy Implementation Unit for the world? My heart breaks and my spirit screams every time I hear of another American dying on Afghanistan soil, fighting, apparently, for the Afghani people. Aren’t we hunting down terrorists? Wasn’t that our mission? Like I said, I may have missed something here.
Either we fight to win or we come home. Let Afghanistan fall back into the hands of those they cannot seem to be able to fight themselves. Let Afghanistan fight for Afghanistan. If they don’t have enough brave men to do so, let them ask NATO. If the Taliban and al Quaida can come in, if we were to leave, and take control, then that falls on Afghanistan, not us. Why should we send our American men and women thousands of miles to their country to help them, when there are supposed “allies” much closer to them? It leads me to believe that the Taliban and al Quaida aren’t as despised over there as we would have been lead to believe.
America can find and kill these people, these Taliban and al Quaida extremists. We can. I believe this. I just don’t think Obama believes this. I don’t think Obama wants to leave Afghanistan anytime soon, for some reason. Never mind that it is men and women who understand sacrifice far better than he does. Never mind that it is men and women who are far from home in a land where they are waiting for Obama to do something, anything, and give them something concrete.
These are Americans, in a foreign land, fighting for a nation that really doesn’t care about them. They are waiting on our leaders in DC to give them a purpose. Our POTUS has said that he doesn’t really like using the word “victory”. I couldn’t imagine serving under such a CiC.
I love our military. I know what they are going through. They need to either be allowed to win this thing, or bring them home. Keeping them there, in The Sandbox, with this half-assed and half-hearted leadership in DC is an insult and a affrontage to America, and will lead to only more unnecessary deaths of Americans.
They deserve better.
Mr. Obama: Either let loose the fullness of our military might and let them be the best they can be, showing the world why we are The Strongest One There Is, or bring our military home. If you don’t, you will have another Viet Nam on your hands. Like I said, God help us.

Right on, Donald!! Couldn’t agree more!!
Donald:
In you post you say:
“I thought we were there to hunt and kill terrorists who belong to al Quaida and the Taliban, before they can harm us again. Did I miss something?”
Then later:
“Reading the news reports it seems to me like we are there to establish democracy in a Muslim nation, like we did in Iraq. When did that happen?”
I think you and the president are actually on the same page:
The President put forth the central question:
Many people in the United States — and many in partner countries that have sacrificed so much — have a simple question: What is our purpose in Afghanistan? After so many years, they ask, why do our men and women still fight and die there? And they deserve a straightforward answer.
And gave his answer:
So I want the American people to understand that we have a clear and focused goal: to disrupt, dismantle and defeat al Qaeda in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to prevent their return to either country in the future. That’s the goal that must be achieved. That is a cause that could not be more just.

As for the “victory” quote, do you disagree with President Obama there? Do you think there IS a single leader in Afghanistan that will sit down at a table (like Emporor Hirohito) and sign surrender papers with our generals? As your Fox News link points out, that is what President Obama was saying will NOT happen when fighting a non-state actor.
PJ,
As ever, your ability to read what isn’t there is astounding.
Obama and I will never be “on the same page”. What he says and what he does are usually polar-opposites. I am an American Conservative. He is a whiny, self-loving, arrogant, liberal with severe father issues. I wonder how many nights have gone by wherein Michelle had to stroke his head and lull him to sleep because he realizes America hates his policies.
Here it is in a nutshell:
Obama stinks. Afghanistan is going to be another Viet Nam. Politicians cannot win wars. We need to either have our “leadership” commit to killing terrorists, or bring the troops home. Period.
As to Afghanistan and its future: I could care less. Let Afghanistan run Afghanistan. We aren’t there to have picnics, we are there to kill terrorists.
Consider this my only response to your drivel. I have more important matters to attend to.
