White House backing off stance on Iran – for now

Last week, Obama tried to flex his muscles when it was announced that Iran had a secret nuclear facility near Qom.  The President gave the impression that Iran’s deception was not acceptable and would not be tolerated by the United States.

But in a quick change of pace, senior White House officials are now singing a different tune.  Fox News reports:

…senior administration officials said the U.S. would not push for sanctions against Iran at the Geneva talks.

The officials also said that while gaining access to inspect Iran’s uranium enrichment facility near Qom is “critically important,” the U.S. won’t walk away from negotiations if Iran refuses.

Although sanctions will not be used during the Geneva talks, some administration officials claim that several sanctions are being generated, but they would give Iran a “matter of weeks” to show a willingness to negotiate.

In the meantime, Iran continues to test its delivery systems and move forward with operations at it’s nuclear facility.
