According to a recently released Rasmussen poll, nearly half of all Americans believe that a government run health care plan should not provide coverage for abortions. Although President Obama continues to claim that abortions will not be covered in his health care plan, opponents continue to argue that his claims are misleading. According to factcheck.org, Obama’s opponents are right:
The president said “no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions.” But the House bill would permit a “public option” to cover all abortions, and would also permit federal subsidies to be used to purchase private insurance that covers all abortions, a point that raises objections from anti-abortion groups. That’s true despite a technical ban on use of taxpayer dollars to pay for abortion coverage.
To put the issue to rest, Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN), submitted an amendment that would exclude abortion coverage in the House’s bill. Souder’s amendment, like other abortion exclusion amendments, was blocked by the democrats.
Regardless of what is in the bill, the majority of Americans do not want taxpayer money to be spent on abortions:
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% believe any government-subsidized health care plan should be prohibited from covering abortion procedures. Thirteen percent (13%) believe such plans should be required to cover abortions, and 32% favor a more neutral approach with no requirements in either direction.
For the 48% of Americans that are opposed to abortion funding, the democrat agenda is clear!
