Olympia Snowe was the only Republican to vote against amendment to prevent abortion funding

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) sought Wednesday to tighten language in the bill prohibiting federal funds from being used on abortions, but the amendment failed 10-13.

Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) voted with Democrats against the measure, while Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) joined Republicans to support Hatch.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) supplied another memorable moment, telling Hatch that she was offended by the amendment.

“I find it offensive that in here any woman, any family purchasing through the exchange, if they did not receive any tax credit would be prohibited from having the full range of health care options they need,” Stabenow said.

Hatch said he did not mean to offend, but there were people who are offended by taxpayers subsidizing abortion.
